Blog Notes

There Are No Rules
I was really honored this week to be mentioned by Jane Friedman on her There Are No Rules blog as one “of the best websites with continuing posts, resources, and news” about self-publishing, especially since there were only four mentioned. The other three were Self-Publishing Review, Publetariat and RIT Open Publishing Guide. You can read the article here: The Best 101 on Self-Publishing + Resources Thanks, Jane!

August Schedule
It’s August by the time you’re reading this. For the month of August The Book Designer will be switching to 2 posts a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays plus the regular Sunday This Week in the Blogs post. In September I’ll be back to a regular schedule.

This time of the year is a unique opportunity to collect ourselves for the fall that’s to come. Election seasion, product launches, new players in self-publishing, new distribution options and new ways to reach your readers will be coming online. It’s an exciting time in book publishing and I’m thrilled to be part of finding the ways to use these new resources so we can all profit.

This Week in the Blogs

This week, as the summer deepens, new products are rolling out in ereader land. Get some reading on Kindle’s distribution domination, how the ebook scene is developing, where the real profits are in publishing, using the power of niche marketing, and understanding how to differentiate your books. Enjoy!

Chris Brogan on Chris Brogan
Amazon and the Kindle Conspiracy
“As the Kindle app will run on your desktop, your phone, your tablet, the Kindle tablet, whatever, they’ve got you in the mood to swipe up books without much thought. The moment the Kindle stretches distribution to other things, it’ll be the big giant explosion.”

Joe Konrath on A Newbie’s Guide to Publishing
Ebook Predictions Redux
“Eight months ago, I made some predictions about the future of ebooks. Let’s see how I’m doing.”

Christy Pinheiro on The Publishing Maven
Authors: Be Like Daft Punk
“If you have a product that is exceptional, why should you give the bulk of your revenues to a traditional publishing company? Publishers don’t know who is going to be the next “big thing.” They’re just guessing—just like the rest of us.”

Alan Rinzler on Alan Rinzler / Consulting Editor
Boost your book sales with the magic of niche marketing
“Niche marketing works in every genre, fiction and non-fiction. Smart authors these days realize that niche marketing is a highly effective use of their time and energy.”

Hank Quense on A Book Inside
Book Differentiation
“Your differentiation statements are the key to converting the visitors. These statements tell the world why your book matters and why readers should buy it.”

Thank you for the great links Joel.

I really liked Christy’s post, daft punk have it right when they say “control is controlling your destiny without controlling other people.”

Congratulations on being mentioned on Jane Friedman’s blog, you deserve the acclaim (I mentioned you here too a little while ago).

Mayowa, glad you liked them. This is a fun thing to do each week. I gradually arrived at this format because when I go to a link page that’s got 20 links on it, I kind of glaze over, so I thought 4 or 5 would do the trick. And thanks for the shout out, I really appreciate it!

Why?
"Writers change the world one reader at a time. But you can't change the world with a book that's still on your hard drive or in a box under your bed. This blog exists to help you get that book into people's hands."
