This Week in the Blogs, October 25 – 31, 2014

by Joel Friedlander on November 2, 2014 2 Comments

Hard to believe we’re in the final stretch of 2014 with Halloween in the rearview mirror and Thanksgiving and the December holidays on the horizon. Some parts of the country have even had snow already. Whether you’re taking a break from NaNoWriMo or NaNonFiWriMo or just enjoying your weekend, you might want to check out this week’s articles.

Lindsay Buroker on Lindsay Buroker
KDP Select & Kindle Unlimited: Why Ebooks Not Enrolled Are at a Disadvantage
“Until a week and a half ago, I had never enrolled any of my books in Kindle Select. The program came out after I started self-publishing, and I already had readers on the other platforms. That doesn’t mean I’ve never been tempted! Oh, I’m not in favor of giving exclusivity to Amazon, but from the beginning there have been perks to those who are a part of the program.”

Helen Sedwick on Helen Sedwick
Welcome to the Hotel Author Solutions
“Last week, I spoke at a conference where Keith Ogorek, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Author Solutions, gave a keynote address. I was curious to hear how he pitched the various Author Solutions self-publishing service companies. After all, their prices are high and their reputations dismal, yet they still pull in tens of thousands of new self-publishing writers each year. How did the marketing man himself sell his companies? Did he trash CreateSpace, Smashwords, Outskirts Press and other competitors?”

Frances Caballo on Social Media Just for Writers
Indie Authors’ FAQ on Publishing and Marketing
“I’ve accumulated a list of questions that Indie authors ask me at conferences, workshops and even on the bus to the San Francisco Airport. I finally decided that it would be a good idea to answer these frequently asked questions about book publishing and marketing.”

Lee Stephen on Jane Friedman
Indies & Audiobooks: An Alternative to ACX
“Like many an independent author out there, I blazed the indie trail out of a love for the artistic side of things and an understanding that total creative control could result in better projects. And like my fellow indies, I soon realized that Amazon could be an outstanding ally. Their platform for self-publishing was second-to-none, and it enabled us to pack the wagon and head out west (figuratively speaking) to the wild frontier of doing-it-oneself.”

Lysa Grant on Self-Publishing Review
28 Free How-To eBooks For Self-Publishers
“Are you doing NaNoWriMo this year? Or perhaps you just need some direction, inspiration or technical help with your book? We’ve put together a list of 28 totally free ebooks you can download right now that should help you get going!”

Is it a requirement that the book’s title on the front cover be the same as the book’s title on the spine?
    Thanks, Steve

I keep meaning to say thanks for compiling these blog posts, but I get side-tracked clicking the links. This time I remembered…thanks. I never fail to find something interesting here.

Why?
"Writers change the world one reader at a time. But you can't change the world with a book that's still on your hard drive or in a box under your bed. This blog exists to help you get that book into people's hands."
