This Week in the Blogs, November 3 – 9, 2018

100 years ago today the guns of World War One were silenced. 100 years…

There’s no smooth way to go from that thought to somehow working in topics like writing and self-publishing except perhaps to wonder how many stories of those who fought will never be told? I cannot imagine how different our lives might be if not for their sacrifices, and the sacrifices of others in other conflicts, and I am grateful.

Five great articles below for you to check out this week.

Mateja Klaric on Indie Reader
5 FREE (and Awesome) Design Tools for Writers
“As a self-published writer, you often find yourself in the shoes of a designer too. Here is a selection of less known apps and tools that will help you design and improve the looks of your ads, social media posts, and books.”

Scott McCormick on Bookbaby Blog
Lyrics In Books: Your Questions Answered
“If a music artist wants to record someone else’s song, there is a set fee for that use, but rights and fees are entirely up to the publisher when it comes to printing lyrics in books. If you don’t want to violate US Copyright Code, read on.”

Dan Wagstaff on The Casual Optimist
Book Covers of Note November 2018
“This is my last monthly round-up for 2018. Next month I’ll post my round-up for the year.”

Debbie Young on Self Publishing Advice From The Alliance Of Independent Authors
Book Marketing: Make the Most of Your Great Book Reviews
“Great book reviews make an indie author’s day – and until you’ve learned to thicken your skin against the less flattering comments, a low star rating can have the opposite effect. So how do you make the most of the best ones, once that initial flutter of joy has subsided?”

Judith Briles on The Book Shepherd
The Author Success Formula in 8 Steps
“Author Success starts with knowing who the top writers and influencers are in their genre.”

Why?
"Writers change the world one reader at a time. But you can't change the world with a book that's still on your hard drive or in a box under your bed. This blog exists to help you get that book into people's hands."
