We’re in full-bore holiday mode, and retailers are reporting some decent sales from early reports. Here this week we have lots to learn about author websites, how to grow your mail list, one author’s journey, a new self-publishing metric, and some great blogging lessons. Enjoy!

Thomas Umstattd on Author Tech Tips
7 Secrets for Amazing Author Websites
“Most author websites fail to sell enough books to reimburse the author for the cost of building the website. The reason is because most authors don’t know the following seven secrets.”

Penny Sansevieri on The Huffington Post
12 Ways to Create a Mailing List That Will Sell Books
“The key to a good newsletter list is simple really and the biggest piece of this is you’ve got to have something useful to say.”

Shiloh Walker on Shiloh Walker
My Foray into Self-Publishing
“There’s not really a big secret, no big drama, no big fiasco. I don’t plan abandoning the publishing world for the self-publishing world. Self-publishing is a lot of work.”

Mick Rooney on POD, Self-Publishing and Independent Publishing
Self-Publishing Index – December 2010
“We believe the SELF-PUBLISHING INDEX will help to guide authors to services on the up, and those, gradually on the down. If you like, what we are proposing is effectively, a kind of stock exchange for author solutions services.”

Joanna Penn on The Creative Penn
Reflections On Two Years Of Blogging: Lessons Learned
“My first post on The Creative Penn was Dec 3, 2008 so I have just hit my 2 year anniversary. Hoorah! Here are some of the things I have learned along the way, and my commitment to you moving forward.”

And for Something a Little Different . . .

Daily Type
November 2010
“Daily Type is a creative project run by several russian type designers. Day by day, they create original typefaces and post their results along with routine.”

    Dear Joel:
Thanks again for introducing, and re-introducing, me to some great resources. Very strong content.

Thomas Umstattd’s author websites post was especially appreciated, with its link to the statistic on websites with blogs.

How do you find the time to compile such great resources each week?
    Roger

Roger, glad to be of service. This week, I came across each of these articles during the week while working on other tasks and just saved them in an Evernote for review for this post. I do it so you don’t have to! Thanks for reading.

Why?
"Writers change the world one reader at a time. But you can't change the world with a book that's still on your hard drive or in a box under your bed. This blog exists to help you get that book into people's hands."
