Fall is conference time in the publishing world, and it’s a great time to travel to these conferences to meet other authors, vendors of publishing services, to get great education in how to produce and market your books.
And hey, it’s just a lot of fun!
While there are over 40 writers conferences, there have been far fewer conferences specifically aimed at publishers. For many years there was only the annual Publishing University run by the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA). For the last several years we’ve also had the excellent AuthorU Extravaganza in Denver, (going on right now, by the way) run by AuthorU.
Now we have two more events, and while they are very different, either could be a great place to learn more about publishing.
This is the first year for this event, focused on the local author community around Ann Arbor, Michigan, and organized by Thomson-Shore, a full-service offset and digital book printer that also offers indie authors full distribution and print on demand services as well. I know the people at Thomson-Shore, and they are going all out to make this a memorable and educational event.
This will be a one-day event, and here’s the information from Thomson-Shore:
“Thomson-Shore, Literati, and 826 Michigan present Booktoberfest!
“Join us for a celebration of authors, books, art, and bratwurst on October 21, 2017 from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM at 7300 West Joy Rd in Dexter MI. $3 gets you a free meal and access to activities. A portion of proceeds will also benefit 826 Michigan.
“Booktoberfest will feature industry experts from around the country, offering advice and insight for authors, as well as fun and educational activities for the whole family. Authors can even pitch their books to a panel of experts for a chance to win a publishing package from Thomson-Shore!* Enjoy a day of music, food, and fun, while learning about the ever-changing world of publishing and bookmaking. “*To be a part of the book pitch you must register ahead of time at https://thomsonshore.com/booktoberfest/”
At $3, including a lunch, this might be the best deal for a publishing event anywhere. If you’re in the Ann Arbor, Detroit, or northern Ohio, definitely check out Booktoberfest. Here’s the link: Booktoberfest.
The BookBaby Independent Authors Conference—Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
November 3–5, 2017 | Sonesta Hotel, 1800 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19103
In what is anticipated to be the first occurrence of this annual event, the Independent Authors Conference will offer a lot of educational opportunities. Here’s their pitch:
“The Independent Authors Conference is the only conference that educates independent authors on how to cultivate a successful career in the self-publishing industry. Over three exciting days in historic Philadelphia, you’ll engage in workshops concentrated on learning and improving the skills you need to succeed, including effective writing techniques and strengthening your book marketing and promotion tactics.”
BookBaby has lined up an impressive group of 16 speakers for this 3-day event, and I’m really looking forward to meeting people there. Right now tickets for this event are available at a reduced price, so check it out if you plan to be in the area the first week of November.
