This Week in the Blogs: February 15 – 22, 2010

by Joel Friedlander on February 21, 2010 3 Comments

Self-publishing as the Apocolypse, one writer’s struggle to master ebook formatting, watch over the shoulder as a typeface takes shape, oh, yes, a complete guide to getting into podcasting, and Michael N. Marcus saves the world. Does it get any better than that? Enjoy.

Henry Baum on Self-Publishing Review
Self-Publishing is Humanity’s Progress (and also the Apocalypse)
“No one cares about the first time novelist self-publishing, it’s when Stephen King self-publishes because he can make the same – or more – releasing it himself, that publishers are going to start collapsing like newspapers.”

Mark Barrett on Ditchwalk
Open-source .epub vs. Adobe .pdf
“Because the stories I want to publish are straight text, the reflowable .epub format not only meets my needs as an author, but it provides the most transparent reading experience for end users.”

Michael N. Marcus on Book Making
Michael saves the world, or at least may have a solution to the eBook price problem
“Because I’ve been a royalty-receiving author of traditional publishers, and the operator of a tiny publishing company, and a purchaser of zillions of books, I do feel entitled to speak up.”
(Editor: This post was from last week, but it’s so good I didn’t want you to miss it.)

James Puckett on I Love Typography
Designing Armitage
“But I still saw potential in those wonky letters. So I stuck them into a lower layer and began drawing something over them. Inculcated with strategies absorbed in life drawing classes I prefer to draw from a model.”

Ray Rhamey on Writer Unboxed
Creating a Podcast
“Here’s how I I’m going about it, and the tools I use. The first podcast in the series is at the end of this post.”

And for Something a Little Different . . .

Sam Javanrouh’s Daily Dose of Imagery
“Daily dose of imagery is a simple view of my day to day visual experience. I post one photo a day on this photoblog. For a brief technical detail of each photo, leave your mouse pointer on images for a few seconds.”

You know there are a lot of photoblogs out there, and a lot of good ones too, but you can always recognize someone who’s got a special “eye.” I love the new perspective, the new way of looking at the world that comes with it. Enjoy.

I just checked out Daily Dose of Imagery — this guy has a really good eye! I’m forwarding the link to my daughter, who is starting to get interested in photography. Once again, thanks, Joel!

Why?
"Writers change the world one reader at a time. But you can't change the world with a book that's still on your hard drive or in a box under your bed. This blog exists to help you get that book into people's hands."
