If you’re finding it difficult to get motivated during these hot and hazy days of summer, this week’s selection of articles might help to get you focused on your writing and self-publishing projects again.

Debbie Young on Self-Publishing Advice Center
In Praise of Editors – Unsung Superheroes Who Daily Save Authors from Themselves
“Here are some classic errors recently shared on the ALLi Facebook forum, spotted either in authors’ own books or in books by others (not all self-published), to alert you to similar slips in your own work-in-progress.”

Kristine Kathryn Rusch on KRISTINE KATHRYN RUSCH
Define Your Target Audience: The Intermediate Stages (Branding/Discoverability)
“In the past eight or so years since indie publishing took off, writers found that the commodity they lack the most is time. Time to write. Time to research. Time to read. Time to market.”

Vincent Hill on How to Blog a Book
8 Strategies for Writing Successful Blog Posts
“Starting a blog doesn’t take guesswork. However, discovering how to make your blog successful can prove mysterious. But you don’t need to magic or to be a sleuth to discover how to accomplish this goal.”

Steven Spatz on BookBaby Blog
What’s the best time to publish your book?
“Here’s a little-known fact for aspiring self-published authors: The holiday season is not the best time to publish for new, self-published authors.”

Stephanie Chandler on Nonfiction Authors Association
Should You Publish a Second Edition?
“Traditional publishers might suggest a second edition if the first one sells well or if the content changes regularly. Indie authors can decide for themselves when the time is right to do a second, third, or fourth edition of their books.”

Self-Publishing News You Can Use

Instant Rights

There is a new way for self-published authors to approach rights sales for their books. As authors and small publishers work to expand their profits and exposure, international rights have become the next horizon publisher/authors want to explore. The ability to reach out to international publishers and agents is daunting, but there is now a new tool that will make it MUCH easier.

IPR License is a rights-trading platform owned by Frankfurt Book Fair and Copyright Clearance Center and has recently announced Instant Rights, which facilitates rights transactions and creates a buy button that a publisher can put on any page. Instant Rights will be testing and working with publishers this summer and is hoping to open up to AUTHORS by early September 2017. If you are a small press or independent publisher (even of one book), give them a try!

Why?
"Writers change the world one reader at a time. But you can't change the world with a book that's still on your hard drive or in a box under your bed. This blog exists to help you get that book into people's hands."
—Joel Friedlander
