This Week in the Blogs, May 16 – 22, 2015

by Joel Friedlander on May 24, 2015 2 Comments

So do you have any plans for the long weekend, if it is indeed a long weekend where you are? Hope you’re able to kick back and relax a bit and try to make time to read this week’s selection of great articles from some of my favorite writing and self-publishing blogs.

Anne R. Allen on Anne R. Allen’s Blog… With Ruth Harris
Paid Reviews: Why Authors Should NEVER Buy Amazon Reader Reviews
“Last month the Seattle Times reported that Amazon is suing a bunch of paid review mills…. Unfortunately, many paid review sites don’t feel they’re doing anything wrong.”

Dara Beevas and Amy Quale on Wise Ink
ACX-cellent: Audiobooks for the Indie Author
“If e-books equalized the publishing frontier for self-published professionals, it’s safe to say that audiobooks are the last great holdout for traditional houses. … Requiring equipment, time, and technical know-how, audiobooks have always seemed more expensive and like too much hassle than they’re worth.”

Laurie Boris on Indies Unlimited
Is Scribophile For You?
“I’m lucky to live in an area where you can’t throw a Kindle without hitting a writer. Not that I recommend you do that; it makes them cranky and it hurts the Kindle. But it does offer the opportunity to find a face-to-face critique group. If you reside off the beaten path or if the circumstances of your life don’t permit easy travel, gathering a roomful of writers can be more challenging.”

Jordan Rosenfeld on Social Media Just For Writers
How Not to Sell Books on Twitter … And What to Do Instead
“After the thrill of writing and the exhilaration of publishing comes the thud of marketing. For many writers, this is where they fall off the face of the cliff in exhaustion or anxiety. Writers are, after all, more often creative people than business people, easily overwhelmed by shilling one’s work in a crowded marketplace.”

Debbie Young on ALLi – Self-Publishing Advice Blog
Book Marketing: How to Be the Best Ambassador for Your Books
“It’s often said that no-one can speak as passionately about a book as its author, so it makes sense to be ready to handsell your self-published book wherever you.”

Thanks for the shout-out for my post on paid reviews. These paid review mills are slick–and they’re duping a lot of newbie writers. We need to spread the word that they are considered unethical and will get you in deep trouble with the Zon.

    Great links as always, Joel!

Why?
"Writers change the world one reader at a time. But you can't change the world with a book that's still on your hard drive or in a box under your bed. This blog exists to help you get that book into people's hands."
