This Week in the Blogs, July 31 – August 6, 2011

Sometimes you think you’re deep in the doldroms of August and exactly nothing is going to happen because everyone as at the shore or wherever people go in August. Then you turn around and people are publishing terrific, helpful and thoughtful articles. My way of saying there’s a real feast for you this week, and one “grandfathered in” from last week. Enjoy.

Martin Lastrapes on Self-Publishing Review
A Self-Publisher’s Manifesto
“And if you are a writer or a publisher or anybody who is still holding onto or perpetuating the stigma of self-publishing, let it go. Release it from your grip and accept the dawning of a new era, a better one even.”

India Amos on Digital Book World
E-Reading Application Showdown, Part 2: Typography
“Just as I’m capable of losing myself in the pages of a cramped, blurry mass-market paperback if the story is one I want to read, so, too, can I block out consciousness of the less-than-ideal typography of an e-book viewed on a small screen.”

M. Louisa Locke on M. Louisa Locke
Why Self-Published Authors Know Best
“I would take this one step further. I think that self-published authors may know the most about publishing, period, in this time of expanded ebook publishing and social media marketing.”

Jon Reed on Publishing Talk
10 Twitter Hashtags for Writers
“Here are my top 10 hashtags for writers, with suggestions for how to use them – and a recent example of each plucked from the Twittersphere.”

Alan Rinzler on The Book Deal
The “New Author Platform” – What you need to know
“The New Author Platform requires a focus on developing an unobstructed back and forth between authors and their readers, with the authors — not the publishers — controlling the flow.”

Why?
"Writers change the world one reader at a time. But you can't change the world with a book that's still on your hard drive or in a box under your bed. This blog exists to help you get that book into people's hands."
