I’m on a campaign to bring some of the accumulated wisdom of copywriters and internet business to the world of author blogs. If you think about it, a nonfiction author with a book to sell is a perfect candidate for online business. If you can sell your book as both a printed book and a downloadable eBook, even better.

It seems that few writers think to make the leap from their literary endeavors to actually and actively marketing their books.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve been writing articles about learning to use keywords, about writing search-engine friendly copy to bring people interested in your topic to your website. There they can learn about you, your book, and your community.

Let’s face it, you can have the most beautifully-designed, carefully-edited book possible, but if nobody ever sees it, you will end up with a disappointing readership.

I also recently wrote about the Scribe service invented by Brian Clark of Copyblogger, and how it helps me keep focused on the kinds of things that are important to search engines.

I don’t write my blog for search engines, of course, I write it for the people who like to read it. But whether you keep keywords, anchor text, links and all the other lessons of long-tail book marketing in mind while you write, or you add these elements in an editing pass later, it just makes sense.

Brian Clark’s New Report

Coincidentally, just a few days after my article last week about Scribe, I received an email from Brian announcing he had written a complete 28-page report to explain how all this search engine writing stuff works. This is good news. Brian is a terrific copywriter, and I thought that he could make sense of it for people with no previous experience.

I downloaded his free report—it didn’t even require an opt in or email address—and read it the other night. And it is what I thought it would be, a clear and focused guide to how to accomplish the goals I talked about above—getting appropriate and motivated people to your website or blog.

He calls it How to Create Compelling Content That Ranks Well in Search Engines. Here’s what Brian had to say:

SEO Copywriting Report

Is this report perfect, the ultimate guide to copywriting? Well, no, it’s not perfect. As I was reading it I kept wishing there were more practical, real-world examples like the ones we looked at in earlier articles.

But as a basic tutorial it would be hard to beat. Whether you’re interested in Brian’s Scribe service or not, grab a copy of this report if you want a free, simple explanation of what this “SEO” copywriting is all about.

Takeaway: Brian Clark’s free resource on writing for search engines makes real progress in explaining this field to newcomers. It’s recommended.
